On 25 October 2026, 2 of 4 resale platforms' own pages allowed any handbag to be returned for a change of mind (Vestiaire allows it only from professional sellers); The RealReal's returns page listed handbags among items not eligible for return, while its authentication page tells shoppers to buy with confidence.

Read from each platform's return and authentication pages on 25 October 2026; sources linked in the table. No order was placed.

Which resale platform lets you return a handbag?

Fashionphile and Rebag do, with different clocks and costs; Vestiaire depends on who is selling; The RealReal does not. Fashionphile gives 15 days from delivery, Rebag gives 7, and Vestiaire gives 14 days only when the seller is a professional seller. The RealReal's returns page lists handbags next to swimwear, luggage and beauty as not eligible, though its FAQ says a return may be accepted if, after review, the item "was incorrectly described".

In short:

  1. Longest window for a handbag: Fashionphile, 15 days from delivery, with a $14.99 label if you use its own.
  2. Shortest window: Rebag, 7 days, and a return fee of $25 to $100 unless you are a Rebag+ member.
  3. No change-of-mind return: The RealReal for handbags, and Vestiaire for items from individual sellers, which you can relist instead.
  4. Most conditional authenticity refund: Rebag's, which turns on a "verified authenticator" proving the item inauthentic.

How do the four policies compare, line by line?

The table sets each platform's stated terms side by side. Where a page did not say, we say so rather than fill it from another source.

What does a return cost?

From $14.99 to $100, and it depends on how the platform charges. Fashionphile's page offers three ways to return and prices only its pre-paid UPS label, at $14.99. Rebag charges a fee by item price: $25 up to $999, $50 from $1,000 to $2,999, $75 from $3,000 to $7,999 and $100 above $8,000, with no fee for Rebag+ members, and says initial shipping costs are not refunded. The RealReal deducts $15.95 for the return label on eligible items. Vestiaire's pages state no return fee for a professional seller's item and a relisting fee, after 72 hours, for an individual seller's.

Rebag appears twice because its fee runs on four price bands. The RealReal's label fee is shown for completeness; its returns page does not accept handbags. Vestiaire states no return fee on the pages read.

What does "authentic" actually promise?

Four things, worded four ways. Fashionphile's authentication page says it guarantees the authenticity of every item it sells "or 100% of your money back", and in the same page says it is not an authorized reseller of any brand it carries. Rebag's article says that if an item is "proven to be inauthentic by a verified authenticator", it will honor a full refund on return, and adds that brands do not guarantee the authenticity of goods sold and that certificates are provided solely by Rebag. The RealReal's authentication page describes a physical examination by more than 100 in-house experts and mentions an authenticity guarantee, but states no terms on that page, and neither its FAQ nor its returns page gave any. Vestiaire's article describes an Authentication and Quality Control Report, with a green or red status per checkpoint, for items sent with Authenticated Shipping, and routes doubts to a support form.

The refund triggeras each page words it, 25 October 2026

These describe the wording, not how often a platform refunds; we have no data on that. "Terms not on page" means the guarantee terms were not on the pages we read, not that none exist.

What else limits a return?

Rules about the buyer, not the bag. Fashionphile requires the Certificate of Authenticity tag to be attached and the item in the condition received. Rebag requires its original tags and says that a return rate above 30 percent in 12 months doubles fees and can bring further restrictions. The RealReal runs a three-strike policy for high-risk return behavior, defined as returning 30 or more items, returning purchases above $10,000, or an overall return rate of 85 percent, and says a strike falls off after 12 months. Each of these is stated on the platform's own returns page.

Rebag's Final Sale rule has a paid exception. Its Final Sale Return Protection article says optional coverage bought at checkout lets an eligible Final Sale item be returned for a change of mind, within 7 days of delivery, with free return shipping, for orders where the eligible Final Sale items total up to $20,000. It is "powered by" Seel, which supplies the label, receives the return and issues the refund. The same article says the protection does not cover items not as described or authentication concerns, which stay under Rebag's standard policies, and that the fee is non-refundable after 24 hours. The article does not state the fee, so we do not.

Keep this before you buy
Screenshot the platform's return page and the item's listing on the day you order, and note the date. If you are buying a handbag at The RealReal, its returns page lists handbags as ineligible, so plan on keeping it unless it was incorrectly described. At Rebag the clock is 7 days from delivery, so book any outside authentication inside it.

Which policy for which reader?

For another read of what "authentic" does and does not promise, see Chrome Hearts jewelry: where it is sold and what resale asks and the Cartier LOVE bracelet price history, which sets resale asks against the maker's list price. For jewelers' own return terms, see the five-jeweler policy comparison.

How we compiled this

Method

On 25 October 2026 we read each platform's own return and authentication pages in a normal desktop browser and copied the stated numbers and wording, not summaries from review sites or the platforms' AI answer boxes. Where a page did not state a fact, we say so. We have not bought, returned or sent in a bag to any platform, and we did not test any authentication, so this page compares written policies and says nothing about how well any of them is applied. Policies change, so check the live page before you buy. Next review: January 2027.
